Thank you for visiting my grade 3/4 website! Many of the lessons and units found here are now shared through my PD company IdeaShop (www.ideashoppd.com). One of our next workshops will discuss the book trailer unit featured in the Professionally Speaking article. Be sure to sign up for our mailing list to receive advance notice for this and other upcoming workshops!
Selected workshops are also available through the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario PD series 'Presenters on the Road'. Contact your local or visit ETFO's website for further information.
Looking Back
June 26, 2012
What an amazing year it has been! I will forever treasure the many memories made in Room 139, and thank you for sharing them with us along the way. Please enjoy this Animoto video inspired by your children.
Lights, Camera, Action!
May 12, 2012
A huge thank you to all the parents who came to the computer lab to watch our Animoto book trailers on Friday morning! I know that many others of you would have liked to be there with us, so here are the links that will take you to your child's work! Seeing as the children's last names and faces aren't featured in the videos, I am also planning to load them up to YouTube to be enjoyed by the world. I'll look into that next week, and let the kids know if I was successful. Be sure to let us know your thoughts on our Comment Page (found under "More..." at the top of this page). Enjoy!

The Great Outdoors!
May 3, 2012
Miss Burston and I took the grade 3s out to the Bill Mason Centre today. We learned a lot about the different types of plants in a forest, as well as how the First Nations people used them for medicines. We also had a chance to create a 'soil profile', and went hunting for fungi and invertebrates. Special thanks to Mrs. Strachan and Mrs. Childerhose for being our volunteers for the day. Check out the photos from our day below:
Rock On
March 21, 2012.
The grade 3s were heading off to see an in-school NAC performance so the grade 4s and I decided to squeeze in an hour of 'Strictly Grade 4 Science'. We dug out the amazing rock kits that our school is so fortunate to have, and had fun performing scratch tests on different rocks, looking at fossils up close, and sorting samples into 'rock' and 'mineral' groups. When the 3s returned, we decided to all head out into the sunshine to put some of our new Science vocabulary into action. Students were challenged to find at least 2 rock samples that varied in 'size', 'colour', 'lustre', or 'texture'. Who knew hunting for rocks could be so much fun!

Now Boarding...
March 9, 2012.
We decided to get into the March Break spirit a little early today! Armed with buckets of magazines, and our finest beach wear, we headed off to our very own "1st Class Lounge" (a.k.a. the front lobby) for a little reading time. The students had a lot of fun pretending we were waiting for our airplane to arrive, and greatly enjoyed sampling the different style of reading that magazines have to offer. The fun continued at dismissal time when each student was handed a boarding pass to his/her vacation!
(P.S. Our 'monster page holders' were also part of our pre-March Break fun. A big thanks to Pinterest for the great idea!)

Snowshoe Adventure!
March 2, 2012.
Today we took advantage of the recent snowfall and headed out for some snowshoeing! All of the students pitched in and helped Miss Burston and I with the buckles, straps, and fastners - it really was a team effort! We even made an interesting discovery in the woods - a teepee made out of sticks! We are truly fortunate to have this special equipment, and a beautiful space right behind our school in which to use them.
